There are two ways to get a passport faster: pay for expedited service at any acceptance facility, or, if you travel within 14 days, book a passport agency.
Expedited service ($60)
Add $60 to your application at any of the 583 California offices or to a mail renewal. The State Department says expedited service takes 2–3 weeks and does not include mailing; 1-2 day return delivery costs $22.05. Check current processing times.
Urgent travel: passport agencies in California
With international travel within 14 calendar days (or a foreign visa needed within 28 days) you can book Los Angeles Passport Agency, San Diego Passport Agency and San Francisco Passport Agency. Appointments are free; book online or call 1-877-487-2778. More in passport agencies.
Life-or-death emergencies
If an immediate family member abroad has died, is dying or has a life-threatening illness or injury and you must travel within 14 days, call 1-877-487-2778 for an emergency appointment.
